Connect ChatterMate to your own data with RAG

Upload documents, connect a knowledge base, and teach ChatterMate to answer questions grounded in your own files and content.

1

Open the Knowledge Base settings

Inside ChatterMate, click the settings icon in the sidebar and choose Knowledge Base. This is where you manage all the documents and sources that ChatterMate can reference.

2

Upload your documents

Click Add Source → Upload Files. ChatterMate accepts PDF, DOCX, TXT, and Markdown files up to 50 MB each. Drag and drop or select files from your device.

For best results, use clearly structured documents — headers, sections, and bullet points help the retrieval engine find the right chunk faster.
3

Wait for indexing to complete

After uploading, ChatterMate indexes your documents in the background. A progress indicator next to each file shows when indexing is done. Larger documents may take a few minutes.

4

Enable the knowledge base in your chat

Return to your chat window. Click the paperclip icon in the toolbar and toggle Use Knowledge Base to on. ChatterMate will now reference your uploaded files when generating responses.

5

Test with a grounded question

Ask a specific question that only your documents would know the answer to — for example, "What are the refund terms in our policy doc?" ChatterMate will cite the relevant passage and indicate which file it came from.

If the answer isn't grounded in your file, try rephrasing your question to be more specific. The retrieval engine matches on semantic similarity, so context matters.
